About

In March 2020 Leslie Butterfield (visual artist), Teresa Carson (poet) and Cynthia Burnell (arts champion), founded Art in Common Places because they believe art belongs to everyone. Our primary mission is to put art in public places so people can enjoy it in their everyday lives. Our secondary mission is to facilitate live “collaborative conversations” between visual artists and poets to produce works of art that combine these talents. Broadsides and postcards are created from new and unique pieces of visual art and related new poems. Each month, the broadsides and complimentary postcards are swapped out, so the viewers have a variety of art to enjoy.

As of February 2021 Art in Common Places has completed 10 projects with local artists and 7 new projects are underway. You can find examples of our broadsides at locations such as:

  • All Sarasota County Libraries
  • Whole Foods markets
  • Panera Bread Bahia Vista and Sarasota Square
  • Earth Origins market Siesta Key
  • Detweiler’s markets
  • Our Y Berlin and Potter Park
  • Mental Health Community Center on Tuttle
  • Lime Laundromat
  • Sunny Bunny
  • And many more…
