Bio
Michael Kinsey is a portrait photographer, filmmaker and content creator based in Sarasota, FL. He
received a national art scholarship to Ringling College of Art and Design in 1985 and was a founding
member of the prestigious Westcoast Black Theater Troupe where he has worked as a premier actor and
performer since 1994. Michael wrote, directed and produced his first short film in 2019, “Killer Date
Night,” a dark comedy. The film was selected into three film festivals including The Pan African Film
Festival in Los Angeles.
Kinsey’s photography has received national recognition and prestigious awards. He’s shot for Rolling
Stone Magazine and his work has been featured in Inc. Magazine and The Washington Post. The
American Society of Magazine Editors awarded Kinsey’s portrait for the cover of Dartmouth Alumni
Magazine as the Cover of the Year in 2022. His 2024 solo exhibition at Art Center Sarasota, “Views from
the New Horizon”, featured an intimate group of portraits taken for Sarasota Magazine’s “Listening to
Black Voices” series for which he has photographed over 50 individuals.
